The reign of Ivan the terrible
- Resistances to tsarists rules were usually related to the military elite aristocracy known as the boyars
- The Boyars were like European knights and Japanese samurai
- Ivan IV begins to rule at 16, marries into the Romanovs
- Following in Ivan III's footstep, his goal is to improve administration and root out corruption
- Abdicates the throne after getting irritated at the boyars for their intrusiveness
- Panicking subjects ask for him to return to the throne, allow him to use more forceful methods to deal with boyars
- Now he has control over Muscovite territory known as oprichnina.
- He creates a new aristocracy known as the oprichniki and attacks citizens for being traitors, but had no solid reason
Post-Ivan IV and the times of trouble
- after Ivan dies, he leaves no heir
- Russia goes into civil war, weakening it and attracting neighboring civilizations
- This war also causes famine
- Two pretenders take the throne for a while claiming to be the tsar's lost son
- Uprising by slave goes to show the severe social problems
- volunteer armies fought off invaders and also took it upon themselves to elect a new tsar
- New tsar was Mikhail Romanov, relative of Anastasia, wife of Ivan IV
Analysis of Ivan's rule
- He completely destroys any resistance from boyars, making Russia less feudal
- He creates panic within subjects by killing for seemingly no reason which leads to unrest and social problems
- He doesn't even leave a heir, making Russia go into Civil war, weakening it from the inside
- Now the Swedish and the polish are severely threatening Moscow from the outside and it is in the position to collapse
- Volunteers and representatives manage to climb their way down from the pit of collapsing, and fight off invaders while also managing to select a stable tsar
